To celebrate Audio-Technica’s 60th anniversary, the headphone manufacturer presents the ATH-W2022, a new wooden headphone that pays tribute to the brand’s commitment to analog audio. An exceptional wooden headphone that reflects its price: €10,000! But at this price, you get a condensed history of the Japanese brand.
Hand-painted hulls
The ATH-W2022 is a one-off piece designed using traditional Japanese techniques and clad in hand-painted shells. The motifs illustrate sakuras (cherry blossoms) and a Hou-ou phoenix on the left and right hulls using the Japanese Maki-e lacquer technique, the right hull also using mother-of-pearl.
For the love of analog
As the President of Audio-Technica Corporation – Kazuo Matsushita – so aptly puts it:
“It’s an honor to bring a quality audio experience to millions of people around the world. What starts as a simple vibration – a subtle movement – results in an emotional connection, whether when listening attentively to an album or sharing your voice with the rest of the world.”
When aesthetics meet technique and know-how
Inside the shells are 58 mm transducers integrated into acoustic chambers, specially developed and optimized for these closed-back headphones. Audio-technica has designed a new magnetic circuit incorporating a pole and yoke made from laminated pure iron plates, to reduce back emf.
Exceptional expertise
The diaphragm incorporates a pure titanium center dome, compressed to a thickness of 30 microns (0.03 mm). This design provides outstanding reproduction of the upper midrange, while offering excellent high-frequency response.
